7 of the Best Canadian Breweries to Discover on Your Next Patio Visit

As we prepare for the return of warm weather, open patios, and late nights spent once again enjoying each other’s company, Canadians will also be celebrating the return of craft beer to their festivities. Over the past several years, Canadian breweries have benefited from the surging popularity of craft beer, particularly in the spring and summer months. Featuring diverse flavours, an array of profiles, and a label that often tells a story, Canadian breweries have captured the hearts of their customers. The best part? By choosing to patronize Canadian breweries, you’re helping to support local businesses at the same time.

As small-scale breweries have sprouted across the country, more and more Canadians are converting from their summer Caesars and mojitos. From IPAs to sours to stouts, the craft-beer boom is growing rapidly, and for good reason. But with so many breweries available, it’s become almost overwhelming to explore.

But to help you in your quest to find your next go-to summer beverage, we’ve curated a perfect list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic breweries across Canada, from smaller microbreweries to large-scale brewing houses, bringing together individuals from far and wide to tell stories through their craft beer.

It’ll be love at first sip, we promise.

Partake Brewing

Partake Brewing

Billed as “the official beer of adulting,” Partake Brewing is home to non-alcoholic, low-carb, great-tasting beer. Founded in 2017 by Ted Fleming, the brand came to life after he had been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. He set out on a mission to craft the finest-tasting, stigma-free beer, one that people can be proud to drink in any setting. With the goal of social inclusion in mind, Partake Brewing boasts blonde, pale, red, IPA, dark/stout, and peach gose, all from Toronto, Ontario. It’s the non-alcoholic substitute that our entire office has been clamouring for.

Kahnawake Brewing Company

Kahnawake Brewing Company

Kahnawake Brewing Company is the first Indigenous-owned microbrewery on a First Nation’s territory in Canada. Its journey, which began in 2016, was to “change the beer landscape.” Since then, Kahnawake has been making waves within the community to foster creativity and inclusivity in each crafted beer. The menu is comprised of pale ales, lagered ale, stout beers, and almost anything else a beef fanatic could ever ask for. They even sell a beer inspired by the party song, Cha Cha Slide, called “3 Hops This Time”. How great is that?

Bellwoods Brewery

Bellwoods Brewery

In the heart of downtown Toronto lies Bellwoods Brewery. Home to everything from sours to IPAs, this brewery even has some of the freshest beers on tap. Having been on Ossington Street for a decade, founder Luke Pestl’s interest began with Belgium beers but has since expanded to stouts, pilsners, and everything in between. However, what’s most charming about Bellwoods is that despite their evolution, they’ve stuck to old-fashion beer bottles. They also have unique flavours, like a Milkshake IPA and Jelly King sour beers, loaded with fruits. What’s not to love?

Central City Brewers

Central City Brewers

What began as a brewpub in downtown Surrey, BC, has turned into one of the most beloved breweries in the country. Since 2003, Central City has been enjoying brewing some of the finest craft beers in North America. Known for its award-winning Red Racer beer, today the brewery offers a variety of craft beverages including speciality beers, ciders, and both brown and white spirits.

33 Acres Brewing Co.

33 Acres Brewing Co.

Located in Vancouver, BC, 33 Acres Brewing Co. is known as a “space to foster collectivity and fine craft beer.” Each beer is named after the brewery itself, like “33 Acres of Ocean,” which is a pale ale or its Belgian Tripel, “33 Acres of Euphoria.” In addition to the wonderful taste, the minimalistic design of the cans is timeless and adds flair for all beloved beer connoisseurs to enjoy. With beer available on tap and to go, 33 Acres is a true testament to a wonderful experience and stellar production.

9 Mile Legacy Brewing Company

9 Mile Legacy Brewing Company

As it nears its seventh anniversary, 9 Mile Legacy Brewing Company – located in Saskatoon, SK – remains home to some of the most innovative beers in the country. Founded by Shawn Moen and Garrett Pederson, the pair’s love for beer grew nearly a decade ago, causing them to quit their jobs and start the brewery. Each 9 Mile beer not only tastes great but is brewed on-site and comes individually or in packs. While not every small business survived the COVID-19 pandemic, this nano-brewery did! In April 2020, Moen and Pederson began distributing a mixed pack and live-streaming a solo show on Youtube, performed by blues musician Ross Neilsen. But today, customers are now able to enjoy all the great flavours 9 Mile has to offer, right from their brewhouse!

Sober Carpenter

Sober Carpenter

Sober Carpenter is a Montreal-based microbrewery, founded by two brothers with the same goal of creating great-tasting beer. However, as they grew older and started families, their lifestyles began to change. Along with that, so did their recipe for beer. In order to keep their social life active, while reducing alcohol consumption, they turned to non-alcoholic beer with a wide range that takes the cake. They’ve crafted a variety of beers, including organic IPA, a blonde ale, and Irish red, to name a few.  With Sober Carpenter it’s easy to opt for a healthier lifestyle without compromising taste.
